Backpacking solo around the world

Have you ever dreamed of traveling all the way around the earth, becoming one of the relatively few circumnavigators in the history of the world?

What have you got to lose?  Here's my experience:

In 2007 I pulled a junked-up old mountain bike out of my garage, scraped off the rust, and flew to Ireland for the start of a trip that would take me cycle-camping across the Emerald Isle, England, and down the Danube.

The pedal fell off the bike at Dublin airport and I soon broke two spokes, then three by the time we hit the Lake District in England, but somehow we persevered.

In Prague, I ditched the bike (named Dulcinea for Don Quixote's great love by then) and backpacked on through Poland, Hungary, Egypt, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.  For relaxation and to keep my sanity as a lone traveler in often-difficult lands, I took to blogging at internet cafes each night, typing out my adventures on the blackened, gummy keys of ancient computers, often discovered in funky dives at the far end of alleys strewn with rotting vegetables and fruit.

The result was my first book, "Planet Backpacker," a funny look at the alternative reality of global travel.  Packed with legends, history and funny stuff I picked up along the way, "Planet Backpacker" will give you plenty of ideas for planning your own intercontinental trip of a lifetime.  Signed copies are available via PayPal.
